Wellness

Physical fitness is important to residents at Presbyterian Manor. Staying active can help prevent or lessen heart disease, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, dementia and more.

No matter your physical condition, you can take steps to improve your health. Numerous research studies show that it is possible for older adults to maintain or improve their strength, flexibility and physical conditioning.

Here are some examples:

  • When we’re strong enough, we can stand from a chair without help from others or lift a grandchild. Strength training results in stronger muscles.
  • Flexibility allows us to get dressed without assistance and reach for things on a shelf. Stretching aids in flexibility.
  • Being physically active can help you stay fit enough to keep doing the things you like as you get older. Aerobic exercise, like walking, can help build your endurance and overall physical conditioning.

Wellness Opportunities

The Centers for Disease Control cites a New Zealand study that found women 80 and older had 40 percent fewer falls with strength and balance training. Research shows strength training increases bone density and lowers the fracture risk in women older than 50.

Exercising also provides similar improvements in depression as anti-depressant medications. It isn’t known if this is because people feel better when they’re stronger or if strength training produces a helpful biochemical change in the brain. Our rehabilitation experts tell us it is most likely a combination of the two. When older adults participate in strength training programs, their self-confidence and self-esteem improve, which has a strong impact on their overall quality of life.

If you haven't been active in a while, be sure to visit with your doctor before starting an exercise program.

Scheduled group activities

Emporia Presbyterian Manor residents have an opportunity to take part in individual and group activities each week.

  • Regularly scheduled group activities include Sittercize classes every Tuesday and Thursday at 11:15 a.m.
  • Residents who wish to pursue wellness activities on their own can take advantage of our exercise room equipped with two treadmills and four stationary bicycles and a Nustep.
  • For those who prefer fresh air with their exercise, our well maintained sidewalks and scenic fishing pond are reasons enough to justify a frequent stroll around our attractive 20-acre campus.

Emporia Presbyterian Manor posts a new calendar each month to keep residents apprised of times and locations of all scheduled activities.
